New Programs Offered at NECC

Northern Essex Community College now offers three new programs:

- EKG Certificate

- Applied Laboratory Science

-On Line Sleep Technology Program

The EKG Technician certificate program is designed to prepare individuals to perform electrocardiograms on patients to record and monitor their heart rate and rhythm.

EKGs are done routinely as a preventative measure, and are also used as a diagnostic tool. Most EKG technicians work in hospitals, but some also work in doctors’ offices and medical and diagnostic labs.

The new Applied Laboratory Science program will prepare student to work as laboratory technicians in one of three emerging fields: biotechnology, environmental sciences, and chemical analysis.

Students in the two-semester Sleep Technology program will have the option of taking all of their coursework online and attending class for clinical instruction one Saturday a month in the state-of-the-art sleep laboratory on Northern Essex’s Lawrence Campus. This new hybrid option is a collaboration between Northern Essex and Bunker Hill Community College.  Northern Essex will continue to offer the program in the traditional classroom as well.

Rogers Sprill Hill Celebrates 20 Years in Business In April

Rogers Spring Hill Garden Center is celebrating 20 years of ownership by the Rogers family of Ward Hill.  Founded in 1902 the Garden Center has been serving the Merrimack Valley for over 100 years. In 1990 the Rogers family made the purchase as a natural expansion to the farm owned and operated for four generations on Neck Road.

Rogers Sprill Hill Garden Center has seven greenhouses and more than 90% of the annuals and 50% of the perennial stock is grown on site.  More than 20 experts staff the planting, growing, consulting and customer service departments.

Merrimack Valley Hospital Expanding Services

Merrimack Valley Hospital continues to expand services to meet the health care needs of the communities it serves. Soon to open is the Wound Center, a state-of-the-art facility complete with two hyperbaric chambers. Walter Kwass, MD, a vascular surgeon, is the medical director. Also new is the Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, a minimally invasive breast biopsy done with a needle, and the Breast Navigator program, which personally guides women through the process when an abnormal reading on a mammogram indicates additional views, a biopsy or surgery are required. To meet increased demand the hospital has also expanded its Sleep Lab, Adult Behavioral Medicine Unit and Pain Center, and added vascular surgery.
