AREA RESTAURANTS RAISE $8000 FOR LUNG CANCER RESEARCH THROUGH “CHEERS FOR A CURE!” CAMPAIGN Amesbury, MA —   Now in its 4th year, LUNGSTRONG’s “Cheers For A Cure!” campaign raised $8000 for lung cancer research in 2017. “Cheers” is one of many ways that LUNGSTRONG, a 100% volunteer, nonprofit organization that funds innovative lung cancer research, raises money for the fight against lung cancer.  Since its inception in 2011, LUNGSTRONG has raised over $2.8 million for this important cause. This year, 15 restaurants from Newburyport, Amesbury, Haverhill and the Seacoast participated in “Cheers” and donated between 25-50% of sales of their designated LUNGSTRONG drink sales – or in the case of Hodgies of Amesbury — ice cream sundae sales.  The campaign runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day every summer.  Participating restaurants in Newburyport include Michaels Harborside, the Plum Island Grille, the Thirsty Whale and Oreganos; in Amesbury, Phat Cats, Crave, Ristorante Molise and Hodgies; in the Seacoast, the 401 Tavern, the Exeter Inn, the Community Oven, the Goat and the Blue Ocean Music Hall and in Haverhill, Krueger’s Flatbreads and the Whiskey Barrell, the area’s only country music club.  Each restaurant has the freedom to select their own signature LUNGSTRONG drink. “We are so grateful for all the community support for LUNGSTRONG – our restaurant community has helped us raise awareness as well as funds,” says Diane Legg, a 13-year lung cancer survivor and founder of LUNGSTRONG. This year, LUNGSTRONG added newcomers Michaels Harborside, Krueger’s Flatbreads, Whiskey Barrell and the Goat to their list of returning restaurants.  “We chose the rum runner as the LUNGSTRONG drink, because that drink sells itself,” said Matt Kirk, Michael’s Harborside manager.  Michaels raised $750 for LUNGSTRONG in its first year participating in the campaign, right behind the 401 Tavern ($1,000) and the Exeter Inn ($1,992).  The Goat in Hampton raised $600 in their first year with their whiskey-based peach tea drink and Kruegers raised $500 with its LUNGSTRONG Luau Lemonade. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the world and kills more people than breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and pancreatic cancer combined.  For more information about LUNGSTRONG, please visit www.lungstrong.org.  If you are a restaurant that would like to participate in “Cheers to a Cure!” 2018, please contact Robin Schell at rschell@jjwpr.com or 603/770-3607.   ]]>
